Child Employment Law Guidelines

Child Employment Law
A child is anyone who is not over compulsory school age. Compulsory school age ceases on the last Friday in June of the school year in which a child reaches 16 (the school year begins on 1 September and ends on August 31).

There are restrictions on the amount of hours you are allowed to work; the time of day you are allowed to work; and the type of ‘work’ you are allowed to do. ‘Work’ in this instance means helping with a trade or occupation which is carried on for profit, even if the child receives no pay.

If you are wanting to work while still in compulsory education, you will need a work permi. Your parent or carer and the prospective employer are both responsible for making sure that an application form is completed
