Support for exploited vulnerable adults offered at Sheffield Futures

After a year of research, youth charity Sheffield Futures has received funding from the Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB) to support vulnerable exploited adults aged 18 to 25.

The research, by the Sexual Exploitation Project Board, found that there was a lack of service provision for vulnerable adults who are at risk of sexual exploitation and those who have survived child sexual exploitation (CSE).

Sheffield Futures runs the Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service and hosted an Adult Social Worker who conducted research in to transitioning young people and adult exploitation. The Sexual Exploitation Transitions Project paper identified significant unmet needs of both survivors of CSE and those at high risk of being sexual exploited as adults.

Jane Fidler, Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service Manager said: “The lack of service provision for these vulnerable adults placed them at an increased risk of on-going sexual abuse. We are pleased to have received funding to support vulnerable adults.

“Some of the adults we are supporting have previously been seen by our service which supports young people up to the age of 18 who are survivors of child sexual exploitation.”

Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service aims to prevent sexual exploitation, protect young people and offer support throughout Sheffield. The confidential service is made up of youth workers, CSE specialists, healthcare professionals, social care, parent support workers, police and specialist trainers.

The service hosts established pathways of support for under 18s and Sheffield Futures is pleased to expand this provision to 18 – 25 year olds. The new work will focus on the recommendations of the Transitions Project paper, including mental capacity assessments, promoting the signs of sexual exploitation and researching experiences of adult services.
