Sheffield Futures Set to Provide Groundbreaking New Domestic Abuse Service

Tash Bright No Comments

Sheffield Futures is pleased to announce they have been awarded a safeguarding grant from the Department of Education, which will ensure that young people in low to medium risk cases of negative and abusive relationships will get the support they need.

Research conducted by Young Women Against Violence Empowered showed that there was a gap in services for young people aged 16 and 17 and more preventative work with low to medium risk cases of domestic abuse would in turn reduce the amount of young people becoming high risk.

As a youth charity, Sheffield Futures aims to be available to all young people in the local area, whatever their situation may be. The funding from the Department of Education will enable Sheffield Futures to employ two specialist Domestic Abuse Youth Workers and a Domestic Abuse Trainer. The Youth Workers will work directly with young people who are at risk or involved in negative or abusive relationships and deliver one to one support and group work interventions at secondary schools. The Domestic Abuse Trainer will deliver training to practitioners, which would broaden understanding in relation to the complexity and situational peer on peer abuse.

The grant has been awarded as part of Sheffield Futures domestic abuse pilot project, which will test new ways of supporting young people to ensure that they are given help in identifying negative relationships. The Youth Workers will work closely with Sheffield Futures Community Youth Teams and a range of agencies, as well as with young people’s families to help support and empower young people to make positive life choices.
